Rabi al-Thani also known as Rabi-ul-Akhir is the fourth month of the Islamic calendar. In this month, on the 11th, is the death anniversary of the King of Baghdad, Chief of the contented souls, the incomparable, Huzoor Ghaus-ul-Azam, Shaikh Sayyiduna Mohiuddin, Abdul Qadir Jilani, Hassani Hussaini, Baghdadi (May Allah be pleased with him). Muslims throughout the world in this month zealously make arrangements to offer Niyaaz, and Fateha of the Saint of Baghdad. In addition, much charity is given in the names of the pious saints of Islam as a means of conveying reward to these blessed souls from which not only the poor and beggars benefit a great deal, but the souls of the believers also obtain peace, contentment and enlightenment.

Another legend states the reason why Gyarvi Shareef is celebrated. It is because on an occasion a woman forgot to pay her donations towards Gyarvi Shareef or either to say khatam sharif on that day.

It is also said that Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] used to hold a gathering to feed the poor on the 11th of every islamic month. This event was followed by Sultan al-Awliya, Gaus-e-Azam, Shaikh Abdul Qaadir Jilaani, Radhi Allahu Ta 'ala Anhu. Sultan E Awliya Peeran Pir, Hazrath Syedna Ghous E Azzam Abdul Qadir Al-Gillani(R.A) Used To Arrange A Feast For The Esaale Sawaab Of The Best Of Creation, Hazrath Muhammad E Mustafa Ahmad E Mujtaba Noor Ul Hudaa (Saw) On The 12th Of Every Month. So Today The Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jaamath Following The Act Of Ghous E Azzam (R.A) Arrange Giarvi Sharif on The 11th (The Date Ghous E Azzam (R.A) Was Born) So That Ghous E Pak Can Present This Esaale Sawaab On The 12th To Our Beloved Prophet (Saw)

By Esaale Sawaab is meant "conveying the reward of" – In this respect there is a Hadith of Hazrat Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him): "Oh Messenger of Allah, when we give charity on behalf of our deceased and perform Haj on their behalf, do they receive the reward of these actions?" The beloved Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) replied: "Without doubt they do receive their rewards. Not only that, but they become very happy, just as any one of you would become happy on receiving gifts". In a second Hadith, the Messenger of Allah says: "Anyone who recites Surah Ikhlas 11 times and then conveys its rewards to the departed souls, Allah will shower rewards on such a person equal to the number of these souls..."
These Ahadith serve as ample proof that the deceased souls do benefit from the good deeds and charities of the living. This is an opportune moment to relate to the reader the saying of Shaikh Sayyiduna Abdul Qadir Jilani (May Allah be pleased with him). Ghaus-ul-Azam said that "whoever in his distress cries to me for help, he will be relieved of his distress; whosoever in his difficulty call by my name, his difficulty will be solved; whosoever in his time of need makes me as his intermediary to Almighty Allah, his needs will be fulfilled. Any person who performs 2 Rakats Namaaz in which after Surah Fateha, recites Surah Ikhlas 11 times and then making salaam sends Durood on the beloved Prophet (Peace be Upon Him), the garden of mercy, after which he thinks of me and takes 11 steps towards the direction of Baghdad calling my name, then presents his need, with Almighty Allah’s permission his need will be fulfilled.
This prayer (namaaz) is known as Salatul Asraar of Salatul Ghausiyyah: which is a proven means of obtaining fulfillment of one’s needs and prayers. Salatul Asraar is explained by Imam Abul Hassan Nuruddin Alli Ibn Jaleel (RA) in Bahjatul Asraar, and Hazrat Mullah Alli Qari and Shaikh Abdul Haq Muhaddith Dhelvi Qadiri (May Allah be pleased with all of them) have reported from Hazrat Ghaus-ul-Azam (May Allah be pleased with him) the following method:
After completing the Fardh and Sunnat of Maghrib prayers, offer 2 Rakats and in each Rakat after Surah Fateha recite 11 times Surah Ikhlas, then recite this dua 11 times:

Then taking 11 steps in the direction of Iraq (Baghdad) read the following on each step:

Thereafter, making the beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) as the intermediary present one’s needs and desires to Almighty Allah.

On that same week I think it was her sons wedding. All the people invited on the wedding ceremony were on a ferry upset the mother, who was watching the ferry take off. Suddenly the ferry starts to sink. After watching this happening the mother had so much depression that for eleven or twelve years she was running or walking in a jungle forwards & backwards. Suddenly a friend of Allah had appeared who asked her what the problem was. After hearing the problem, the friend of Allah said lets raise our hands and supplicate to Allah. After supplication to Allah the ferry that had sink for eleven to twelve years had started to rise while everyone was safe but only soaked.

The friend of Allah asked the woman, “Did you remember to donate generously towards the Gyarvi Shareef or either to say khatam sharif?” The woman replied “no”. The friend of Allah told her that when she goes back home she should say the khatam sharif and keep donating generously towards Gyarvi Shareef. The friend of Allah said if you don’t find anything back at home then ask your neighbors for a mug of milk and say khatam sharif on that.

So from this occasion people strongly recommend to celebrate Gyarvi Shareef

Also the reason why they call it Gyarvi Shareef is because it is celebrated on the eleventh day of every month. The number eleven in urdu is known as Gyara (I think!), so that’s why they call it Gyarvi Shareef.
